Who We Are
The Chicago Lights Institute (CLI) is a 501(c)(3) civic organization dedicated to advancing community formation through coordinated systems of education, civic engagement, public art, music, and cultural expression that shape the lived social psychology of community life.
Founded by Rev. Dr. Samuel Kirk Mills, CLI emerges from decades of interdisciplinary work in community development, adult education, parent engagement, participatory leadership, cultural formation, and social psychology development.
CLI approaches civic development not merely as a matter of policy and programs, but as the cultivation of shared civic identity, belonging, responsibility, cooperation, and lived community values expressed in daily life.
Our Mission
To strengthen communities through civic formation initiatives that cultivate shared identity, belonging, cooperation, dignity, and responsible civic participation through education, cultural engagement, public art, music, and community-centered social psychology development.
